Museum conferences can be regional, state, or national, but must be based in the United States.It is preferred that the museums be accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, but it is not necessary.The museum-based experiences defined above must be based in the United States at either an art museum, history or anthropological museum, or science museum.First preference will be given to third-year students second preference will be given to second-year students.

Students are encouraged to apply for grants of up to $2,000, with higher amounts considered on a case by case basis, to participate in one of the following museum-based experiences: 1) Museum visits 2) Museum internships 3) Professional museum conferences. Funding of up to $3,000 will be provided through the Student Engagement Network during each of the three annual granting cycles.   • Grant awardees are expected to present their poster at the Student Engagement EXPO (at University Park), in a virtual speaker series (TBA), or at an equivalent regional or remote EXPO experience within one academic year of completing the experience.
  • The module includes completion of a pre- and post-experience survey, assignments, reflection journals, check-in meetings, and a poster assignment. Students who do not attend, fulfill, or complete the Canvas course are subject to lose their funding at the discretion of the SEN administrative team.
  • Grant awardees will be required to complete a free, non-credit-bearing Student Engagement module on Canvas in order to receive their full funding.
  • Grant awardees will be assigned a Penn State Engagement Coach upon funding and will receive specific instructions on working with this individual.
  • Applicants will be required to provide a budget explaining specific use of funding using the budget template provided in the application process.
  • Applicants are required to follow all federal, state, University, and CDC safety protocols regarding COVID-19 and physical distancing during the experience.
  • Students must also be in good academic and disciplinary standing with the University. Students who graduate in Spring, completing their Penn State degree, are not eligible to receive an SEN grant. Students applying for summer funding must be enrolled in summer courses or registered for the following fall.
  • Students must be currently enrolled as undergraduate students at Penn State.

    Importantly, each student will be assigned a Penn State faculty or staff Engagement Coach to help them complete their virtual/remote experience and is expected to attend weekly virtual coaching sessions. Learn more about the SEN Canvas course here.

    Successful applicants will receive the requested amount, either $1000 or $2000, to complete their experience during the grant cycle timeframe and are required to participate in a free, non-credit-bearing SEN Canvas course centered on the student engagement journey. Students may apply for either a $1000 award or a $2000 award. All experiences must follow federal, state, and University policies on health and safety as well as Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines on physical distancing, and should include plans to improve personal growth, professional readiness, and/or social connection/impact. Undergraduate students across the commonwealth are encouraged to apply for an SEN Grant that will support virtual, remote, and/or in-person engagement opportunities in the coming academic year (see specific grant cycles). The Student Engagement Network offers this unique funding opportunity for students which supports the breadth of student engagement experiences in the spirit of both in-person and virtual/remote engagement experiences.
